A significant percentage of respondents to an Insurance.com survey confess to poor driving behavior, with nearly 10 percent admitting that they have driven without car insurance at some point. The relatively high number of people who confess to dangerous driving behaviors should trigger alarm bells for all motorists, according to experts. The findings are a wakeup call for all drivers to reevaluate the type of coverage they carry and for misbehaving drivers to clean up their acts.
The good news is that most drivers are honest with insurance companies about their driving habits and history. The bad news is what that honesty reveals about many drivers, and the danger their behaviors present to others with whom they share the road. "If people admit to recognizing their bad behaviors, it's the first step on the road to redemption," says Bob Passmore, spokesperson for the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America.
The Insurance.com survey reveals several irresponsible and potentially deadly behaviors:
9 percent admit to texting while on the road
30 percent say they talk on a cell phone when driving
A little over 39 percent say they eat or drink behind the wheel
Just under 3 percent read or groom themselves (shave, apply makeup) while driving
With nearly one in 10 drivers on the road without insurance coverage ? and others admitting to behaviors that distract them while driving ? consumers must think about protecting both their lives and finances with defensive measures. Insurance coverage is available to protect drivers from uninsured or underinsured motorists, compensating them for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. This coverage is available to drivers whether they own or rent a vehicle.
Methodology: Insurance.com conducted an online survey of drivers to determine driving safety habits. A total of 1,496 drivers responded.
