Boot (closed) macBook Pro (2011) via Apple Remote?

Boot (closed) macBook Pro (2011) via Apple Remote?

I have a 2011 macBook Pro which I use mostly in clamshell mode and everything works perfectly fine as long as the macBook only goes to sleep and is not shut down, however if I do by accident shut it down, I have to start unplugging it & open the lid, press the power button and put it back in the dock/stand.. which is a tad cumbersome.
I was looking for a way to boot up a shutdown macbook without opening it and pressing the button (which is to be frank a 'strange' feature to look for) and I came across rumors that mentioned that using the Apple Remote would allow to boot the mac without opening it.
Can anyone confirm this from first-hand experience or know another way to boot a shutdown mac with its lid closed?
